Dietary and Self Help
Dietary
The proof of the old saying 'we are what we eat' lies in some of the research currently being done for Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) sufferers. Although this is a developmental disorder, eliminating certain foods or types of food has eliminated many of the symptoms. It has long been understood that certain foods contains certain chemicals which can benefit or harm us, chocolate is a good example. Although ensuring healthy eating is a good idea for everyone, it can be especially helpful to those with depression or anxiety related illnesses as well as those with developmental disorders such as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), dyslexia or dsypraxia. Further information is available through doctors/dieticians and health organisations. The limitations to this are mainly about the cost of food as well as food preparation ability.
Self Help
This is an extremely varied area, including many techniques as well as advice to follow. It can include such things as ensuring adequate food and good sleeping patterns. It can also cover keeping diaries to help concentration or to cover for symptoms of dementia. A worthwhile idea for any mental health patient, when able to, is to ask 'What can I do to help myself' rather than completely relying on others. This isn't always possible, and may require ideas from mental health professionals, but can often be more helpful than other treatments as it is important to feel 'YOU can do it'.
