The Service
At January 2008, the Adult Mental Health Psychological Services team consists of 30 Clinical Psychologists and Specialist Practitioners. The administrative base is at the Pompey Centre (details above).
Staff work closely with the other mental health and Primary Care Teams across the City. Patients are seen in GP surgeries, health centres and both residential and community mental health locations.
Referral Method
At present there are two distinct sections of the service. Primary Care referrals are made jointly by the person and their GP. Secondary Care referrals are made by a person's Care Co-ordinator or Psychiatrist.
Current Activities
The service offers a range of therapies for many mental health problems. Team members concentrate on particular areas such as Anxiety and Depression, Challenging Behaviour, Psychoses and Eating Disorders.
Future Plans
As a result of substantial investment in the service by Portsmouth City PCT during 2007/8, considerable progress has been made towards reducing the long waiting list for treatment. Later in 2008 the service intends to improve access to Psychological Therapies by re-designing the way in which the service works and hopes to participate in the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies initiative from April 2009.
