Inpatient Adult Mental Health Facilities


Service Description:
Portsmouth City Primary Care Trust (PCT) provides a number of Inpatient Adult Mental Health Facilities. These include:
 
Acute Service
 
Crisis Resolution Home Treatment
Provides emergency assessments for those individuals who may require hospital admission. Also provides treatment at home to clients as an alternative to inpatient admission, either through admission avoidance or early discharge from the acute service inpatient wards.
 
Day treatment
Clients may be seen for day treatment for a time limited service either to prevent inpatient admission or facilitate early discharge. This service works alongside the Crisis Resolution Home Treatment Team. This service might include:

  • Individual and Group treatment and support to patients in crisis in order to alleviate the acuity of symptoms or bridge a difficult transition from inpatient to community based care.
  • Initiate Clozaril on an Outpatient basis in conjunction with inpatient unit and the Community Mental Health Teams.
  • Provide therapeutic care and support as an alternative to admission.


Hawthorns
Provides a supportive and safe environment for service users experiencing an acute episode of mental illness who cannot safely be cared for by the Crisis Resolution Home Treatment Service and whose level of risk does not require a locked environment.
 
Maples
Provides intensive Psychiatric Care to service users who are experiencing an acute episode of mental illness who require an increased level of security and care due to the potential risk posed by them or to them as a result of their illness.
 
Referral Method
All requests for admissions to any part of the Acute Service will be screened by the Crisis Resolution team - 023 9268 3400.
 
Oakdene
Provides rehabilitative inpatient user care for people with longer term and enduring mental health problems particularly those who have severe and traumatic past life experiences resulting in a long protracted inpatient user admission and who have not responded to traditional treatment options.
 
Referral Method
Oakdene only takes referrals from within the secondary care adult mental health service however all requests for information on Oakdene can be made directly to the Clinical Manager on 02392 682500.
 
Fairoak
Provides inpatient care in a low secure environment for people with severe mental health problems and/or personality disorders and as a result of their condition may exhibit challenging behaviours.
 
Referral Method
Fairoak is a specialist unit only taking referrals from courts, prisons, other specialist secure providers or from within the secondary adult mental health service. However additional information can be obtained from the Clinical Manager on 02392 89 4324.
 
Hamble
Provides an assessment and rehabilitation service for people with acquired brain injury who have cognitive and/or behavioural problems.
 
Referral Method

Referral Criteria

  • Aged 16 - 64 years (over 64 years if known to Adult Mental Health services)
  • Current GP in Portsmouth City
  • Requiring treatment or assessment for a mental illness
  • Emergency admissions for individuals not registered with a Portsmouth GP (with prior agreement from the responsible Primary Care Trust)
  • Emergency admissions for individuals with no fixed abode
