Dementias
General description
There are several different types of dementia. Whilst it is rare for those under sixty five to be affected it is possible. New variant CJD is a type of dementia. Risks for younger people are small, after sixty five the risk doubles every five years. Approximately one in five may expect some level of dementia.
The main effect is a marked reduction in the mental abilities. Learned physical behaviour such as tying shoelaces may also be affected. Causes vary from brain injury and lack of vitamin B1 to alcohol abuse or old age. Most dementias are a progressive and permanent condition.
Common symptoms
- Lack of concentration
- Confusion
- Self neglect
- Agitation
- Loss of control over speech
- Depression
- Inability to reason
- Occasional hallucinations or delusions
