It is important to remember that the following information is a general guide to the main mental health problems that may arise. It is not a comprehensive list.

Personality disorders – there is still debate amongst health care professionals about whether this is a mental health category. This is mainly due to difficulty with diagnostics capability. This may, commonly be a secondary problem subject to other mental health disorder.

Self Harm – common problem, especially with younger people. Self harm occurs as either a method of release from feelings of mental anguish or as an attempt to exert control over oneself. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and talking treatments may be used to help overcome this problem.

Psychosis/Paranoia – usually a secondary symptom. The effect is a confusion about the reality perceived by others, commonly delusions, hallucinations and fear of others.

Behavioural Difficulties – as with personality disorders, difficult to define or diagnose exactly.

Stroke – many people may recover fully, however some may experience depression, dementias or other problem as a result.

Learning disabilities – not specifically a mental health category. People with a learning disability are a specific group themselves with separate, important issues and needs. People with a learning disability may experience some mental health difficulties, such as depression or anxiety.
