ANXIETY, PHOBIAS AND PANIC ATTACKS

General description

Anxiety and phobias are common illnesses, affecting one in ten at some point in their lives. They can arise at any time in a persons life. As with most illnesses, some appear more genetically prone to anxiety. Stressful situations, especially ongoing, can cause anxiety. Substance misuse can also cause anxiety.

Whilst anxiety is normal, if the feeling is prolonged or too strong it can affect a persons ability to function normally. A phobia is a fear of a particular situation, which is not essentially dangerous. This is often the result of a traumatic experience.

Panic attacks are when the anxiety is so strong, the patient may lose the ability to interact with others or even control their own motor functions.
