Alcohol Misuse
General description
Many people like a drink, however for some it becomes more than this. Alcoholism can emerge at any time of life and affects approximately two out of a hundred people. There is some evidence pointing to a genetic predisposition but this is often exacerbated by life circumstances.
The main effect is loss of control, over both the amount of alcohol consumed and subsequent behaviour. As the body becomes accustomed to the alcohol, increasing amounts will be required to reach the same effect. Both the body and mind become used to operating with high levels of alcohol and withdrawal can be extremely painful.
